The Malaysia Challenge (Langkawi, Malaysia)

In 1997 World Sailing Management was asked by the Malaysian government to organise and manage a sailing event which would put Malaysia on the map as a unique sailing location for top sailing events. In December of 1997 The Malaysia Challenge was introduced which resulted in the biggest sailing event to ever take place in Malaysian history.

The event was a great success. Organised together with the Maritime Exhibition Limaw, The Malaysia Challenge offered 100,000 US dollars in total prize money that attracted an impressive competitors list with World Championship and Olympic achievements. Unique match racing formats were used which was innovative and challenging for most of the competitors. Winner John Kostecki (America One team), when asked about the 1997 Malaysia Challenge remarked, "The conditions prevailed and this was basically a perfectly run event". After the first edition in 1997 the race will be organised again in 1999 by World Sailing Management on special request of the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
